Behind the Scenes: Prairie Restoration Project

September 10, 2015

Earlier this summer, the open fields near Blue Sky Alpacas HQ were part of a controlled burn prairie restoration project. It’s been fascinating to watch each step of the process, and we happened to take some photos along the way to share with our fans!

Above, you can see what the fields looked like at the very start of this project.

The controlled burning of grasslands in particular helps to discourage woody plants and non-native species from overtaking the natural vegetation (you can learn more about this effective management technique here on the Prairie Restorations website).

The dramatic transformation slowly began to take place after the controlled burn had been completed, as you can see in this before & after comparison. The photo on the left was taken on April 24, the day after the burn; the image on the right was taken on July 3 of this year.

Not soon after, we began to see beautiful flowers blooming!
