New Free Patterns!

Is it hot and sticky where you are? Do you want to knit something that is small enough that you will stay cool? How about something a little different? I’ve got some new patterns to show you—and they’re all free, available for download right now.

13th Street Pillow, designed by Elinor Brown. Knit in Peppercorn #816 (A) and Cornflower #800 (B) Melange.

An adorable pillow to practice both fair isle and steeking. Steeking, you say? If you knit fair isle the traditional way, you knit in the round with extra edge stitches. After knitting, the edge stitches are stabilized with sewing and then (eek!) cut apart. It’s an old technique. Your pillow will be proof that you can do it, and not faint.

Perhaps you’d like to try something less demanding. Here’s my Shadow Capelet. Is it a scarf for your neck? Is it a warmer for your shoulders? It can be both. A very simple knit using our new Techno. Try it in the warm neutrals of Rogue #1973 (MC), Club Grey #1975 (A), and Fame #1970 (B) shown. Or maybe put together a combination of the neutrals and brights. It will be delicious to wear once things get a little cooler.

Our own Colleen Powley, she works right here at Blue Sky Alpacas too, created this lovely scarf Techno Scarf to match her Techno Hat design. Shown in groovy Techno Aquarius #1977.

The smocking stitch is so much fun, you’ll want to do it again and again. Before you know it, you’ll have a completed scarf. While you’re knitting, sing along with me: “When the moon is in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars, then peace will guide the planets, and love will steer the stars!…”

Keep on knitting and stay cool!

Skinny on Skinny

Have you tried our Skinny Cotton?

Have you worked with cotton that is hard to knit? It hurts your hands and it doesn’t have any sproing (elasticity) at all, so your stitches are uneven. Our Skinny Cotton is very different — its soft and supple. Really!

Blue Sky Alpacas Skinny Cotton is 100% organic cotton, comes in sophisticated colors, shows great stitch definition, and feels wonderful to wear. I’ve knit our Skinny Cardigan and our Shawl Collar Vest. I wear them all the time. They are easy to wash with the extra bonus: no pilling!

We have lots of great patterns for Skinny Cotton.

And for crochet lovers:

Valerie’s Cardigan

We also have a few adorable free patterns for Skinny Cotton:

Simple Baby Hat

and Girl’s Skinny Tank

There are many wonderful designers creating with this yarn.

Erquy by Heather Dixon, Army of Knitters

Violet, also by Heather Dixon

Botanica Medallion Cardi by Shiri Mor in Vogue Knitting

Very Cherry by Alana Dakos, Never Not Knitting

Have I given you enough ideas?

A cotton sweater for cool summer nights sounds perfect to me. Nice and easy to knit beside the pool, even on a steamy day. You can look for me, I’ll be the one in the shade.

Keep on knitting,

Really yummy, right? Squeeze a hank of this at your favorite yarn store, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

We’re off to TNNA (The National Needlearts Association) next week in Columbus, Ohio. This big trade show gives yarn and other related companies a chance to show off our products to our yarn store customers. Its lots of fun to work and I’ll bet its even more fun to attend! The yarn stores will get to see all of our new patterns and new yarn colors up close. They’ll get to knit a little Techno at our swatch table. I wish you all could come to meet us.

Keep on knitting,

Congratulations to all winners! Please contact me (click Contact Merri on the right side) and send your mailing address, phone number and color selection. Thank you to everyone who entered. There are going to be more giveaways coming and I will be sure to let you know.

Now, here’s a little bit of housekeeping. When I posted the images of our Aprés Vest and Graphic Pullover, I neglected to mention the designers of these really cute pieces. The Aprés Vest is designed by the wonderful Olga Buraya-Kefelian, and the Graphic Pullover by the ever so talented Kim Hamlin. My apologies to them both!

And below our last new Techno pattern to show. The Café Beret, by the amazing Melissa LaBarre, knitted in Tonic Orange #1979 Techno. I’m testing this pattern this week. It’s a fun knit—a cute, lacy puzzle. Please look for these Techno patterns, as well as all of our patterns, at your favorite local yarn store in June.

Keep on knitting,
